Valley Jams: Jazz Orgy

By Steve Hyden

2005.11.17 -- Name: Jazz Orgy.

Hometown: Oshkosh.

Lineup: Mark Martin, piano; Andy Mertens, upright bass; Mark Powers, percussion; Mike Underwood, drums; Steve Cooper, saxophone.

First a little background: Jazz Orgy was born in early 2000 when a group of musicians hosted an open forum to showcase and encourage other local musicians. Jazz Orgy still regularly welcomes guests, including celebrity players from bands such as the Count Basie Orchestra and Journey. How's that for range? The band has a packed concert schedule, playing house band gigs most nights of the week at bars and clubs throughout the Fox Valley. Jazz Orgy will head out on its seventh national tour in February.

You probably will like this band if you like: Jazz, jamming.

Why our band is better than your band: "Our band is better than yours because it's made of rubber," Martin said. "Our band can be used to hold a deck of cards together, keep a poster rolled up, or be worn as a bracelet."

Decide for yourself: You can catch Jazz Orgy at Peabody's Ale House in Oshkosh every Sunday night, Paper City Pub in Neenah every Monday night, Pi in Green Bay every Wednesday night, Fusion in Appleton every Thursday night and Water City Grill in Oshkosh every Friday and Saturday.
